Malaika Abernathy Scriven

Malaika Abernathy Scriven is an accomplished urbanist and place maker dedicated to fostering inclusive economic development in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region. As the Vice President of Planning and Development at the National Landing Business Improvement District, she plays a crucial role in enhancing the area's vibrancy and appeal through innovative placemaking, people-first mobility solutions, and strategic economic development initiatives.

With a strong background in urban planning, Malaika is committed to building partnerships that promote sustainable growth and inclusiveness within National Landing. In her fourth year at the BID, she has successfully led several groundbreaking projects, including the inaugural Equity Forward Action Plan, which outlines actionable steps to create a more inclusive environment for all residents and visitors.

Malaika has also been instrumental in transforming National Landing into an Innovation District by implementing various placemaking and mobility initiatives that enhance the community's connectivity and accessibility. Her efforts aim to create spaces that foster collaboration, creativity, and economic opportunities for all.

Before her role at the BID, Malaika served as the Chief of Staff for the DC Office of Planning, where she led significant community planning projects under Mayor Bowser's administration. This included updating the DC Comprehensive Plan, promoting equitable housing production across all Wards, and cultivating strategic partnerships with various District agencies and stakeholders.

Malaika holds an undergraduate degree in Communications from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH, and a Master of Community Planning from the University of Cincinnati, equipping her with the skills and knowledge to make a lasting impact in urban development and community engagement throughout the Washington DC Region.
